Devotional from Jan Ross

Today's Devotion

"My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise."
(Psalm 57:7)

Today's Thought

David's prayers in the Psalms reveal so much about life . . . about what
the Lord desires from us!  This is just another "revelation" of God's
desire for His people . . . He desires for their hearts to be "fixed".
Steadfast, immoveable, and stayed on God.  Always in a position of prayer
and praise, always ready to humbly submit to His will, always listening to
His voice . . . "Fixed"!

Perhaps David wasn't making so much a declaration that his heart was fixed, but just maybe he was telling his heart to remain fixed in the face of
temptation or weakness.  This would be not unlike all of us!  We make
choice after choice to obey or disregard the commands of the Lord; if our
hearts are "fixed" there is no question, but obedience comes naturally to
the submitted will of man.

God couldn't have found a better man to make this statement than David.
David sinned greatly against God.  He had every reason to run and not deal with his sin.  But instead of covering it over, he boldly proclaimed his
determination to serve the Lord regardless of the personal cost to him.

Is your heart fixed . . . fixed for duty?  Can you say in the face of
adversity that your heart's gaze is set on your Strong Tower?  Is your
heart in position to praise and worship Him?  Our hearts must be fixed on
Him, the main thing in all acts of devotion . . . David checks out his own
heart before entering into worship!  Check your heart today . . . if it's
not fixed, pray and ask the Lord to show you the weak points.  He'll never
fail to meet a request like this!

Today's Prayer

Father, thank you for your heart as seen through the Psalmist David!
Examine my heart, O Lord, and see if there is any disobedience in it.  Help
me to remain steadfastly "fixed" on you in ever situation, in all
circumstances.  Lord, I love You above all else . . . may my heart remain
"fixed".  Amen!

Have a blessed day!

"But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
(Mark 13:32 NRSV)

I remember reading about a man in New England in 1938 who went into a store and bought a new barometer, which he took home and proudly placed in his office window. When it was hung he consulted it anxiously to see what the weather would be like that day. Lo and behold the barometer said "hurricane." Here he was in New England and the idea of a hurricane seemed absurd to him. So he grabbed that barometer in a huff and rushed back down to the store to return it. The store clerk asked, "What's the matter?"

He said, "Here I've traveled all this way to this store to buy this barometer and it's reading hurricane."

The store owner said, "Oh, I'll happily refund your money."

He got his money back and started the long journey home. By the time he got home, his house had blown away because of the hurricane that hit New England in 1938.

People are always looking for signs concerning Christ's return. We do not know when our time will come, but we do live in anticipation that God will fulfill God's promise of giving us eternal salvation.

God of peace, thank you for the prince of peace who brings salvation to all. Amen.
